PONGO'S NEIGHBOUR

Pongo was a dog who was always boasting.

'Do you know,' said Pongo to Dick, the neighbour's dog, 'my kennel is big and grand as a palace!?'

'Could I come see it?' asked Dick who wasn't sure what a palace was.

So the two dogs trotted off to pongo's kennel. It was certainly roomy and comfortable.

'My word!' exclaimed Dick enviously. 'You are lucky to have such a grand home.' He wished he could think of some way to get even with Pongo. Suddenly, Dick caught sight of a large, juicy-looking bone in the corner. This gave him an idea. 'There goes your doorbell,' he said.

'I didn't hear anything,' said Pongo.

'I'm sure I heard it,' said Dick. Pongo prided himself on being a good watchdog, so he hurried off, barking loudly.

When Pongo returned to say there was no one at the door, he found no one in his kennel… and no bone either!

Poor Pongo.
