Chapter 18: Where We Belong

There was a knock on my door Saturday morning, I had to pull myself out of bed, slamming my fist down on the alarm that I'd conviently not bothered to listen to so I could sleep in, but somehow a knock on the door downstairs could wake me up. I yawned but padded down the stairs, the floor chilly underneath my sockless feet. "Coming," I groaned under my breath as the door was rapped on again.

A blurry image of someone shone through the crystallized door window, and I twisted the door to reveal the person standing on my porch.

The snow had stopped and had settled on the surface of everything after the week full of it drifting down from the sky. Standing there clad in a very comfy looking jacket and ball cap was Rayne, a big goofy grin on his face. My eyes widened at my appearance; haven't bothered changing from the sweats and t-shirt I wore to bed, the little snowman visible on my pants. "Um. Hi?" I asked, sort of a greeting, but more like a curious question.

"Hey, you doing anything today?" he asked outright, his hands in the pockets of his blue jeans that hung just low enough on his hips to look good; but not so much that they sagged. The baseball cap was loosely placed on top of his ruffled blond curls that bounced as he talked, not threatened by the faint dampness in the air.

"I guess not?... Come in, it's too cold outside for you to let all the heat out," I muttered as I ushered him inside of the doorway, and shut the door behind the two of us. I breathed a slight sigh of relief as the continues stream of cold air was stopped. "I was going to get some homework done, why?"

He shook some of the snow off of his baseball cap, how it got there, I don't know. "Well I need you to come with me to town today,"

"Why?" I asked suspiciously, but already it sounded better than sitting by my desk all day with a pencil and homework at hand.

"Just can you do it? I don't feel like explaining-"He sounded very Tristan-like at the moment, and I rolled my eyes, pretending to consider the options, but the answer was already good as written in stone.

"Fine, just let me get dressed and everything, you can go wait in the living room," I waved him over to where the leather couch sat in the living room and ran up the stairs, a bit of excitement managing to fully wake me up. But it did come to mind, why in the world Rayne would even be here to ask me to go someplace, in the first place. I frowned as I reached my door, I didn't like surprises.

"Hurry Up," Rayne urged from the living room; and I shut my door with a sharp outlet of air, that it blew a piece of hair out of my face. I had to get out of these grungy sweats of pajamas, my college t-shirt hung loosely on my shoulders, and I quickly made it over to the closet.

I rummaged through the neatly hung clothes in the closet; knowing practically every piece of material in the small walk in. The favorite hoodie of mine stook out like a sore thumb, its dulled pink making me grab it. It felt soft underneath my fingertips, after all the times it had gone through the washer and dryer, but a side effect meant it had drained away the bright pink that had been a trademark of the brand. That and pair of jeggings that I usually reserved for weekends that I knew I wouldn't be seeing anyone and be embarrassed to be seen in them, but with Rayne, I'd probably be fine. Of course that is when my alarm chose to go off, blaring in a failed attempt to wake me up the time I had normally scheduled to wake up for the weekends. I had to run across the room and leap onto my bed so I could slam my fist onto the button, even though I didn't know who in the world I was preventing from hearing it, and waking up from it.
