Chapter 23:

The moments between when Hayden handed me his phone and when I finally whispered a faint "hello?" more thoughts ran through my head than in the whole week. The majority of which were just sheer confusion. Sure, I knew who Gemma was- and had caught glimpses of her running across our lawn late at night, or maybe spoken a few words to her in the times I had gone to Whiskey's- but I couldn't understand why she would want to talk to me. All I knew was that it probably wasn't anything good.

She didn't answer right away; she let out a sound that was somewhere in between a strangled cry and an exasperated sigh. Beatle stared at me inquisitively with an arched eyebrow while Hayden ran a furious hand through his dark hair. Something clearly was not right.

"Gemma?"

She took in a gulp of air and then continued to let out a billion words in four seconds. "Something happened to- I'm at the hospital. And he keeps asking for someone and I don't know what to do. My parents are in Aruba for their anniversary and I- Jesus Christ. I don't know what to do. Holy shit, holy shit, holy shit-"

"I don't understand. What happened?" There was a lot of background noise, people shuffling about and the resonating sound of footsteps pacing back and forth- I wondered if they were hers.

"Just, come to St. Anthony's Hospital."

"Wait, Gemma, what-" I was cut off by the sound of her ending that call. I sat silently for a few moments with the phone screen still pressed against my cheek; I had never been so confused in my life.

"What did she say?" Hayden pried the phone from my hand and stared at it for a moment before realizing she wasn't there. I furrowed my eyebrows.

"She's at the hospital. Did she tell you anything?" I pushed myself back from the table and got up out of the chair while Hayden shook his head sadly.

"She told me everything and nothing all at the same time. I didn't even know what she was saying."

"I think she's in shock, obviously something happened." I grabbed the keys off the counter and was lacing up my boots before Beatle even had a chance to get up from his chair.

"Is everything okay?" Mom asked, frowning deeply. I couldn't exactly tell her because I had no idea. It didn't sound okay, but yet it seemed so surreal that I couldn't exactly find myself getting severely worried.

What the hell was even happening?

"I'm not sure, I'll call you." I was reaching for the door knob and Hayden was just starting to put on his jacket, Beatle was still staring in pure confusion. None of us really knew what was happening, but he definitely knew the least.

She looked concerned and asked, "Do you want a ride?"

"No, I'll drive," Beatle spoke up, pushing his mug of coffee away from himself and finally standing up.

In less than a minute we were settled into Beatle's car. Hayden was twiddling his thumbs in the backseat while I was flipping through the radio stations incessantly; I wasn't even looking for anything. I was half waiting for Beatle to get mad at me but I knew he wouldn't.

"Anyone have an idea why Gemma would be at the hospital and freaking out?" Hayden finally asked, looking up part the dark fringe that he called his bangs. I could see him through the rear-view mirror, and I swore he never looked more vulnerable than at that moment.

"You didn't get her pregnant, did you?" Beatle asked bluntly, and Hayden wrinkled his nose in reply.

"I don't think so." I was glad Beatle was driving the car because I probably would have slammed on the breaks.
