Where Were You?

For a friend.

WHERE WERE YOU?:

Where were you? My fair-weather friend,

Where were you all this time?

What happened to the memories six months ago,

What happened to the hoard of promises I turned into a shrine?

I remember the red rubber of the running tracks,

And the stars shining down on us.

I remember the rounds we made around fake grass,

All the unreal shards lining our past.

I remember the assurances you made,

Planning our future into the unknown.

You, telling me that our friendship was foolproof,

That you will gather the flowers from the seeds we’ve sown.

But where were you after all that?

Where did you go?

You disappeared into a fog of angst and sour,

Different from what I’ve known.

Where were you when I cried

Over the shadows of my life?

Where were you when I wept

Over the harshness of everything in sight?

Where were you when I needed you most

When you had a chance to fulfill your promises?

Or were they empty, packed with vacuum,

Drained dry by your other wishes?

Where were you when I was thinking about you,

Praying for your safety, day and night?

Oh I see, you were with her,

Having the time of your life.
