"You know, you are not like any of the hobbits I have seen." He still had a hold of my hand.

I proceeded to tell Thorin about myself.

"My mother met an elf, they fell in love, but he had to leave. For war, I believe." I shrugged.

Not knowing my father, made me not worry about him much.

"I see," he nodded and looked me over.

"I would love to go on an adventure.." I sighed.

He pulled back, startled. He knew exactly where I was going with that.

"You.. A woman? Want to go with us? That is absurd!"

I stood defiantly. "And why is that?! I can fight just as well a the next hobbit! I am not afraid of the outside world as Bilbo clearly is."

"I think that is a great idea." Gandalf said from behind us.

I turned to look at him, a wide smile on my face.

"You cannot be serious Gandalf. A hobbit is one thing, but a female hobbit?"

"Scarlet is only half hobbit you know. The other half is an elf. A warrior. I say we give her a chance." He winked at me.

"Oh thank you Gandalf! You will not be sorry! I promise!" I ran up to him and hugged his legs.

Thorin huffed and turned to look into the fire.

Two of the dwarves, Fili and Kili walked up to me.

"Is it true that you're to be going with us?" Asked Fili, smiling.

I nodded.

They cheered. "Finally something nice to look at!" Kili laughed and put an arm around my shoulders. I laughed and looked back at Thorin, who was glaring into the fire with a pipe in his mouth.

(Thorin's POV)

I could not believe that wizard. Was he insane? Letting a hobbit woman come along on our journey was crazy.

"...finally something nice to look at!" Kili said.

I felt a pang of anger towards my nephew. What? Why? He was only playing..

As I looked into the fire, I kept seeing crystal blue eyes looking back at me.

I shook my head. No. Why was I feeling this way?

I heard my brethren start coming into the room behind me. They all sat down.

I began humming. I heard others join in.

I continued to hum until a song came to mind.

"Far over the misty mountains cold,

To dungeons deep, and caverns old

We must away, ere break of day.

To find our long-forgotten gold."

The others sang as well.

"The pines were roaring on the height

The winds were moaning in the night

The fire was red, it flaming spread,

The trees like torches blazed with light"

(Scarlet's POV)

My heart swelled as I listened to the dwarves sing. I had always heard that dwarves loved to sing, but I had never actually heard it.

It was beautiful.

I sat next to Fili and Kili. I knew I was going to be great friends with these two brothers.

Thorin continued to sing, and butterflies grew in my stomach as I watched him.

I could hear the sadness in the song in all of their voices, but in his, it was the greatest.

After they finished, Thorin walked over to Gandalf. They seemed deep in discussion, and then Thorin walked outside.

Fili and Kili were talking to Balin and Dwalin, and I saw my chance. I followed the dwarf king.

Once outside, I saw him sitting on Bilbo's bench. He was looking up at the moon. A slight breeze came, lightly blowing his hair.

He shivered slightly. Not from cold, but from dislike. He was not happy. He would rather be in his dwarven city. Where there were no trees, no wind.

He sensed my watching him, and he tensed up. "What do you need."

I sighed and sat next to him. Rather close; it was a small bench.

"I know you don't believe in me."

"You're right. I don't." He bluntly stated.

I glared at him.

"What makes you think woman can't fight? Do not dwarf women?"

He sighed. "Not necessarily in battle. They are tough though, and will fight to defend their families."

"As can I! I am not weak!" I crossed my arms over my chest and looked out over the fields and houses.

Thorin hesitantly put a hand on my shoulder. Fire went through my entire body from that one touch.

"I believe that you are strong. But there are many dangers in the world. More than you know. Orcs, goblins, dragons.."

"I can fight. I will prove it to you." I looked into his eyes.

He looked deeply into mine as well. "I suppose... If Gandalf says you are a warrior... It could be true.."

Another breeze washed over us, and made my hair blow around my face.

He gently reached up and pushed it behind my ear. His hand lingered on my face.

"So different.." He almost whispered.

"Different from what?" I quietly asked.

"Dwarf woman." He stroked my cheek once. "Beardless."

I looked at him, quite confused. "Beards?"

He laughed. "Yes. Dwarf women have beards, as well as the men."

I looked from his eyes to his beard.

"They are thinner than men's of course. And softer."

"I have never felt a beard before."

He shifted a little. After a few seconds, he grabbed my hand.

Slowly, he put it on his bearded cheek. I could tell that this was very difficult for him.

I had heard that dwarves were very protective and proud of their beards. I thought it very odd, but was honored that he trusted me enough.

Suddenly, the door to the hobbit hole opened. Dwalin stood in the doorway. I quickly removed my hand and Thorin stood.

"We should leave at first light." Dwalin told him. Clearly he had not noticed anything that had happened. Thorin nodded and Dwalin turned and walked back inside.

Thorin looked back at me. "Are you sure you want to go?"

Without hesitation, I nodded.

He gave me a small smile at my enthusiasm.

"Be ready at dawn."
